The history of many olive oil companies is a family history. A story of love and passion for olive growing.
Castillo de Canena, a historic Spanish family olive farm, located in the heart of Andalusia, is all this but it is also a company in step with the times and with the most modern production technologies.
A story that began in 1780, and which takes its name from the family castle in Canena, in the province of Jaén (Andalusia), a geographical area renowned for its olive-growing tradition, near Úbeda and Baeza, a UNESCO World Heritage city.
The company, now managed by the brothers Rosa and Paco, offers an important variety of typically Spanish cultivars of organic cultivation. The sustainability and biodiversity project begins in the olive groves and continues until the bottling stage.
Also internationally available in the best food shops, on the US market too, Castillo de Canena is one of the most quoted international companies, with further medium and long-term projects aimed at offering the best sensory experiences.

When and how was Castillo de Canena born?
The Castillo de Canena project was born as a personal and family project of the Rosa and Francisco Vañó brothers. The Vañó family has been producing olive oil since the 18th century. Marketing was always in bulk, as is usual in the province of Jaén from where they originate. Both Rosa and Francisco Vañó had their respective successful professional careers. Rosa Vañó as Marketing Director at Coca-Cola Spain and Francisco as Director at Banco Santander in Milan.
Rosa took the first step towards a project in her more personal life, more intimate, more linked to nature and its origins. She said goodbye to Coca-Cola to investigate EVOO, the possibilities that she could have to give this product the added value that she so deserved. Her brother Paco said goodbye to Banco Santander and joined his sister shortly after. Since then, the two brothers have researched and worked to make Castillo de Canena a family business but professional, innovative and in the continuous search for excellence.

What is the characteristic of this particular production of extra virgin olive oil?
Castillo de Canena oils are monovarietal (three varieties: Picual, Arbequino and Royal) and early harvest. They are very balanced oils, very fragrant, with a lot of personality. As the estate is very large, the best payments (like the wine) are selected for the brand’s oils, using the most advanced technology for their collection and production. Furthermore, it all starts in the field. Well-treated and nourished trees, without the use of pesticides, respecting the environment and investing in the repopulation of hectares with Mediterranean trees, adapting the farm so that species of birds that were no longer can return, striving in short, to leave a better legacy and more sustainable than they received from their ancestors.

What cultivars do you grow?
Picual, Arbequino and Royal. In addition, we have an experimental field of varietals. Together with various official organizations, we have a field where varietals from all over the world see how they adapt to our climate and type of soil and altitude. We have already chosen 3 international varietals so that, within a few years, we can have surprising oils, combining cultures and love for EVOO from the Mediterranean basin.
