Discovering Spanish Extra Virgin Olive oil: Palacio Marqués De Viana

Written by Veronica Lavenia

There are stories of family businesses that can be compared to a historical novel. The history of Palacio Marqués de Viana is one of them. And when the story is so old, it can only be a love story. Love for an ancient and noble food such as Extra virgin olive oil which in Spain has always been the ingredient par excellence.

From the same family company Castillo de Canena, a production of organic Extra virgin oils of the highest category, born from decades of studies, from sustainable cultivation of the latest generation of oil mills.
In the Guadalquivir Valley, in the province of Jaén, in the heart of Andalusia, Palacio de Marqués de Viana lovingly treats its olive groves, surrounded by the “Natural Park of Cazorla” and the “Sierra Mágina Massif”, as well as from eight kilometers of the “Guadiana Menor” river.
A story of love and quality that the company tells as follows:

Bodegon Patio de Viana

When and how  Palacio Marqués de Viana was born?

Enriching the know-how of Castillo de Canena, acquired after 300 years producing EVOO and more than 15 years focused on the excellence of its olive juices, Palacio Marqués de Viana was born from this extensive experience and focuses on taking a further step in terms of Gastronomic innovation is concerned: the creation of unique blends capable of displaying the most precious tasting notes of each of the varietals grown.

Bosque mediterraneo.

For the production of our blends, we have traveled and learned assembly techniques from the best whiskey master blenders in Scotland. Being able to guarantee the stability of our EVOO over time is a symbol of the excellence of the house and, most importantly, a guarantee for our consumers.

The name Palacio Marqués de Viana combines that experience and search for excellence in our olive juices with someone, to date unknown, who set the course for the EVOO sector: the Marqués de Viana, Mr. José Saavedra. Such was the involvement of the Marquis in the development of the Extra virgin olive oil sector, that he got the King of Spain himself, at that time, Alfonso XIII, to travel to Jaén to inaugurate his new oil mill, one of the most modern in the time, with the most advanced technology. On that day and publicly, the Marquis expressed to the King the importance of promulgating a law that would regulate the olive oil sector, speaking for the first time about what we now know as “Extra virgin olive oils”. Finally, this request became a reality, with the approval of the first EVOO quality protection law in 1926. To this day, this Palace that marked history is owned by our family and welcomes with open hands any lover of this wonderful and magical product that is EVOO.

In which area of Spain is your company located and what is the characteristic of this geographical area, such as to make the olives and extra virgin olive oil you produce special?

Our olive groves are located in the province of Jaén (Andalusia, Spain), nestled in a unique natural space, between the natural parks of Cazorla and Mágina. In addition to this privileged location, with part of the Guadiana River that runs through our farm, what makes it special is all the work we do so that our olive grove looks great strength and a complete environmental health of both the flora and fauna that there inhabits naturally.

We are completely dedicated to the search for excellence in the process of making our extra virgin olive oils, and this begins in the cultivation of our olive trees. As farmers, we preserve the precious tradition of sustainability in our fields, we are a 100% sustainable company and not only that, but we are immersed in numerous projects of different national and international universities, as well as NGOs, for the preservation of biodiversity in the olive grove, something that at the same time enriches our soils and, therefore, our olive trees. Sustainability together with the preservation of biodiversity are fundamental pillars of our family since the beginning of time, they have been working and investing in the same direction for more than 15 years, with the aim of making a better planet.

Which cultivar do you grow on the farm?
Picual, Arbequina and Royal (already mentioned in the interview with Castillo de Canena).

Why is Palacio Marqués de Viana EVOO special?
Our EVOOs are a guarantee for the consumer in terms of product quality (defined and fruity tasting notes, aromatics, we maintain the cold chain throughout the process, we bottle on request – we do not have stock. We bottle with nitrogen so that the consumer receives our EVOO in perfect condition, the most internationally recognized quality certifications …) but also in terms of guarantee for the planet and CSR it has to do. Our olive trees live in a unique environment, in terms of caring for the plant cover, flora and fauna.

In addition, we work for a social environment that is also as friendly as possible both for our employees and for society as a whole: a few months ago we obtained the international SGE 21 certification in terms of ethical and socially responsible management, being also pioneers in incorporating ourselves to the UN Global Compact, adhering to the 10 Principles of said Pact in matters of Human Rights, Environment, Labor Rights, Sustainability and Fight against corruption.
