Ulldecona Ancient olive trees route

Written by Veronica L.

In the sun-drenched southernmost reaches of Catalonia, where the Montsià region gracefully transitions into Valencian lands, lies Ulldecona, a municipality rooted in the very soil it cultivates. Beyond its imposing medieval castle lies a treasure of immeasurable historical and natural value: an unparalleled collection of ancient olive trees, guardians of a living history stretching back through millennia.
Ulldecona boasts an astonishing 1,524 cataloged ancient olive trees spread across its expansive 126 square kilometers. These giants are more than just trees; they embody the Mediterranean spirit, silent witnesses to the ebb and flow of civilizations that have cherished olive cultivation for over two thousand years. They form an authentic, millennia-old cultural landscape, a tangible link to our shared past and a unique “Walk Through History”.

To allow visitors to immerse themselves in this extraordinary natural heritage, Ulldecona offers two distinct, independently explorable areas: the Millennial Olive Trees Area of La Foia and the Millennial Olive Trees Area of Camí de Montsià. However, for a truly profound encounter with these ancient wonders, the Arion Millennial Olive Trees Natural Museum offers a unique guided experience.
This remarkable museum, inaugurated in 2006 following an accord with the Porta and Ferré de la Galera families, houses 35 specimens of ancient olive trees within a mere hectare, collectively known as the “Fons de l’Arion.” This concentrated area represents the largest concentration of millennial olive trees in the world.
These trees bear the indelible scars of centuries, each crease and hollow a testament to the accumulated wisdom and expertise of diverse civilizations. From their Roman origins, through the agricultural advancements of the Byzantines and later Christian cultures, these trees have been nurtured and sculpted.

The immediate surroundings of the Arion Museum amplify its majesty, with over 400 ancient olive trees contributing to a context brimming with natural resources, profound history, cultural fusion, and invaluable learning opportunities. The profound significance of this sensitive environment dictates a policy of discretion regarding its precise geolocation. Even the municipal tourist office, while facilitating guided tours, refrains from publicly sharing the museum’s exact address and prioritizes the preservation of this unique ecosystem.
The guided tour at Arion is more than just a walk. Experts unveil the secrets held within these ancient specimens, explaining their diverse varieties, cultivation methods, and the historical context of their existence.
And then there is the fruit of these ancient trees: the olive oil. The oil extracted from Ulldecona’s millennia-old olive trees is a product of exceptional quality, a flavorful and exquisite elixir that proudly represents of the unparalleled Mediterranean diet. Each drop encapsulates the essence of this fertile land, the dedication of generations, and the enduring legacy of these remarkable trees.
Ulldecona, strategically positioned amidst the whispering leaves of trees that have witnessed empires rise and fall, the true essence of the Mediterranean unfolds.
