David Bowie IS, is the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie – one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times. Over 300 objects including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photography, set designs, album artwork and rare performance material from the past five decades are brought together from the David Bowie Archive for the very first time. The exhibition demonstrates how Bowie’s work has both influenced and been influenced by wider movements in art, design, theatre and contemporary culture and focusses on his creative processes, shifting style and collaborative work with diverse designers in the fields of fashion, sound, graphics, theatre and film.
The exhibition’s multi-media design introduced Sennheiser’s advanced sound technology alongside theatrical scene-setting, original animations and video installations to create an immersive journey through the artistic influences that Bowie has cited as formative.

MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna
Inaugurated in 2007, MAMbo is the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna. With its 9,500 square metres dedicated to visual culture and experimentation, it is located in the historic ex-Forno del pane building (a former municipal bakery), and is a centre of production and a critical workshop for interdisciplinary contemporary culture. The museum’s Permanent Collection offers the public an interpretation of Italian art through the history of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna and the subsequent acquisitions, from the 1950s to the most recent developments of Focus on Contemporary Italian Art, a section supported by UniCredit. Among the artists represented in the collection are Carla Accardi, Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Monica Bonvicini, Alberto Burri, Enrico Castellani, Tony Cragg, Matthew Day Jackson, Plamen Dejanoff, De RijkeDe Rooij, Lucio Fontana, Christian Jankowski, Fausto Melotti, Liliana Moro, Luigi Ontani, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Bridget Riley, Nick van Woert, Francesco Vezzoli, Christopher Williams and Gilberto Zorio. Through its rich exhibitions activity, MAMbo explores the present and contributes to marking out new developments in art, following the most innovative experimental practices. All the temporary exhibitions, broad-ranging monographic and collective shows of Italian and international artists are organized within a perspective that is open to research and the dialectic between the works and the exhibitions context. Inspired in part by the history of the building, built as a bakery to provide bread for the city of Bologna in 1915 and located in an area which at the time was dedicated to industrial production and has recently been converted into a Manifattura delle Arti, MAMbo pays close attention to the cross-disciplinary nature of contemporary artistic languages. Since 2012 MAMbo hosts Museo Morandi, the largest and most significant public collection in the world dedicated to Giorgio Morandi: a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of Morandi’s style in every medium and in every poetic variation. Dialogue with the public is of the greatest importance: the museum’s Educational department introduces visitors to the latest cultural practices and contemporary expressive forms, providing adequate instruments for their understanding.
MAMbo is part of the Istituzione Bologna Musei, the integrated museums system of the Comune di Bologna.

The exhibition ‘David Bowie IS’ finally lands, as unique event in Italy and last stage in Europe, at Bologna from the 14th of July to the 13th of November.
